VOODOO FESTIVAL LINEUP ANNOUNCED

New Orleans’ Voodoo Festival, set to hit the Big Easy October 24-26, has revealed its full performer line-up. In addition to the headlineer REM, Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots, Death Cab for Cutie, Panic at the Disco, Erykah Badu and Lil Wayne will play in the more mainstream Le Ritual section of the festival. Much like the city itself, the Voodoo Festival is split into three distinct sections. The Le Flambeau area will feature music more in tune with the hometown sounds of New Orleans with sets by Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The third section, Le Carnival, will feature a bunch of Big Easy indie bands, burlesque shows and circus acts. It’s like a three-day Mardi Gras over in that Le Carnival section.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

It's my birthday bitches!! I don't have much more to say about that... From here on out I start to go backwards in age. I kick my 4 day celebration off with a massage tonight to help me relax and to help me cope with the fact that I'm another year older. Actually, I have finally come to terms with it, and I look forward to what the next decade has to offer! After my massage I plan on grabbing a bite to eat with some friends. Friday night I have dinner set for the trendy hot spot Katsuya in Hollywood (maybe I'll be seated next to Brangelina). On Saturday I'm having a monster bash at mi casa with some of my really close friends, and I cap it all off on Sunday with a brunch at Kokomo. It's the Peach Pit for the new 90210 that premieres on the CW this fall. Thanks to everyone for all the love & support this past year. It was definitely a year full of some crazy moments, and these past 10 years were filled with a lot of great memories. Here's to the next 10 years... WOOT WOOT!!

CALEXICO - CARRIED TO DUST

WE STILL HAVE A FEW MORE MONTHS UNTIL SEPTEMBER, BUT THIS LITTLE TEASER WILL HELP GET ALL YOU (ME INCLUDED) CALEXICO FANS THROUGH THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. ENJOY!

Two years after Garden Ruin, Calexico has returned and is offering up Carried To Dust, the new full-length record due September 9, 2008.

For Carried To Dust, Calexico co-founders Joey Burns and John Convertino called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest work to date. The band lineup that solidified around Feast of Wire (Burns, Convertino, Martin Wenk, Jacob Valenzuela, Paul Niehaus, Volker Zander) is back again, along with a number of guests, including Sam Beam, Douglas McCombs, and Pieta Brown.

This new record is a shining example of Calexico's commitment to constantly molting and redefining who they are. A continued examination of their sources of inspiration, Carried To Dust is the next step in Calexico's ongoing quest of moving forward while never turning its back on the past.

Along with extending the collaborative bridges with other artists, Carried To Dust also reflects Calexico's amazing live shows, as well as underscoring the band's restraint and beauty. A remarkably well-rounded album, Carried To Dust showcases every aspect of Calexico's exceptional talents.

KERLI Q & A

It's been years in the making and today...the wait is over! Today is a big day for the Estonian born Kerli. Her debut album LOVE IS DEAD hits stores, and brings her one step closer to super stardom. I had the chance to sit down and discuss some things with this Island Def Jam cutie; from her favorite TV show to her hard times in Estonia. She's not like most 21 year old rising stars in Hollywood. She's an a amazingly sweet girl, focused with great determination. She has a great head on her shoulders and nothing but the open road ahead for her. Get ready for Kerli domination...

MB: Hi Kerli! Thanks so much for taking the time out to talk with musicbleep today. Are you in New York right now?

Kerli: “No I’m in L.A. I love New York, but I love the sunshine, you know, I’m a hippie at heart. I wanted to surround myself with real people, and after hunting in L.A. you can find them….I have been here for about a year and a half.”

MB: How were you to able to break out of a place with limited opportunity? What was your journey?

Kerli: “I came from Estonia, then moved to Stockholm and recorded some music there, then went to New York, and now L.A.”

MB: How were you discovered?

Kerli: “Well the light blue dream, it doesn’t work that way. It was six years of hard work, and going through several steps to get where I am today.”

MB: So this is your debut album, you must be over the moon excited?

Kerli: “Well I am happy that I was able to create everything I was able to create on a major label without giving up what I wanted; the animated fairytale thing…it took a lot of time and patience, and hard work. I was able to come out sounding not just like a typical major label artist.”

MB: Do you write/co-write your songs, and what was your inspiration?

Kerli: “I grew up in a communist minded and restricted surrounding, also in an abusive surrounding, so my escape was my music, it was the light at the end of the tunnel. I was overcoming obstacles and darkness, instead of rainbows and cookie cutters. You must face the obstacles to overcome these things… to get that point and understanding. You have to got through the heavy shit; it expands your heart, compassion, and how can you understand other peoples pain, if you have not felt it your self.”
“I am inspired by my own life experiences. I wrote my melodies and lyrics over the course of five years. I was that depressed teen, so my album might sound a little schitzo, but I don’t want to pigeonhole myself. We are all human, and everyday is different.”
“There was not much culture in my house, no books, no TV, no music. We had two cassettes, Phil Collins and Bonnie Tyler, but I did study classical piano. Music is a language of God, you do not need to go to church to feel God, so you do not need to listen to music to create music.”

MB: Did you always know that you wanted to be a performer?

Kerli: “Yes. This was my escape, my out. I made a book of Kerli. It was images and collages, etc., of restrictions that inspired me to create a dream world for myself.”

MB: What CD’s or other bands are you listening right now?

Kerli: “Future Sounds of London, Sigur Ros, I love a lot of different kinds of music.”

MB: What would you be doing if you were not singing? Being in L.A. do you see yourself getting involved in any other forms of entertainment?

Kerli: “I was a dancer for eight years when I was younger, and I took acting classes, but I only want to do things that I am good at, and I want to stick to what I am good at.”

MB: Do you have any pets?

Kerli: “Yes, I have a Chihuahua named zero.”

MB: What is your favorite color?

Kerli: “White.”

MB: What is your favorite quote?

Kerli: “ ‘This too shall pass’…it’s fucking genius.”
“I want to create two envelopes with that quote inside for my friends. So whether they are having a bad day or a good day, I can give them that quote to make them realize that with everything that is going on, life is like waves from the ocean, and it can get crazy either way, but underneath it’s always the beautiful ocean.”

MB: What is your favorite place you have been, or would like to go?

Kerli: “I would love to go to Tibet.”

MB: What is your favorite TV show or movie?

Kerli: “Well I don’t watch either, but I would have to say Sex in the City, and don’t tell me what happens in the movie, because I have not seen it yet.”

MB: What is your favorite song?

Kerli: “Sigur Ros, The Nothing Song.”

MB: If you could predict the future, what does the future hold for Kerli?

Kerli: “Happiness.”

MB: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us! It was such a pleasure getting to know you.

Oh, oh, oh, oh Swede Child O' Mine...

So, seriously folks, what is going on? In the 80's, the UK ruled the music scene in America by brining us acts like The Sex Pistols, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and many, many more! Then the 90's, we were blanketed with plaid shirts, Doc Martins, and grungy, unwashed hair with the Seattle sounds of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, then leading us into the techno, rave era. Now, I am convinced that Sweden is the new sound of the 2000's! We have The Sounds, Jens Lekman, The Knife, Lykke Li, etc., etc., etc., and I have just recently discovered the enchanting artists, TAKEN BY TREES! I first heard them with a cover of Guns and Roses 'Sweet Child O' Mine', which, I might add, is AMAZING!! Then researched them more, and there music is so intoxicating and wonderful. I don't even know who to compare them too, as they have a sound all their own. So do yourself a favor and check them out www.myspace.com/takenbytrees, and go to itunes and download their album, there will be no disappointments!!
