This week, Musicbleep had the amazing opportunity to interview Gary Go, recently opening for Lady Gaga. It was a great way to get inside the head of this musical mastermind and learn about his influences from comedians, musicians, artists and iPhones, to his greatest childhood memories. GG seemed like a real down to earth, regular guy with a realistic and honest look at life. Get to know a bit about Gary Go...



MUSICBLEEP: What was it like being on tour with Lady Gaga?

GARY GO: It was like being born again on a summers day

MUSICBLEEP: Can you describe this performance you do with just your iPhone?

GARY GO: It's Faustian with some Freudian slips, heavily influenced by Jackson Pollock

MB: Do you get nervous before a performance?

GG: I used to more so. I got nervous before performing at Wembley Stadium, because it's so huge and because I grew up next to it...it was always the place I dreamed of playing.

MB: How often and for how long do you rehearse before a show/tour? What are your pre-show rituals? How do you get ready for the crowd?

GG: My pre show ritual is singing the opening of the first song over and over to make sure I can at least get started and don't freeze up.

MB: When and why did you start performing?

GG: It was a bet I made with a friend at kindergarden. They bet me if I could become a rock star, they would give me their lunch for a month.

MB: What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood/town?

GG: One of my fondest musical memory is going to see Michael Jackson at Wembley Stadium. Got some great Radiohead memories. Driving past Trent Reznor. Meeting Tool. I need to start a musical memory bank.

MB: What was the first tune(s) you learned? What was the first instrument you began to play?

GG: First instrument was piano...I was always trying to write my own songs.



MB: Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? Which famous musician(s) have you learned from?

GG: I admire Michael Jackson, Prince, Trent Reznor, David Bowie and Peter Gabriel.

MB: Who/what inspires your music?

GG: Charlie Kaufman

MB: What’s playing on your ipod right now? Who have you been listening to lately?

GG: Dan Black, Kings of Leon, Florence and the Machine

MB: How would you describe your music to people?

GG: I would let them describe it first and agree with whatever they said...

Gary Go will also perform on his iPhone and Mac (as well as traditional instruments) at Apple's NYC SoHo store this Sunday, August 16th at 2:00pm with an audience Q & A to follow. Go, who describes his music as “anthemic, epic, sharp pop with honest words,” wrote many tracks for his first album using software downloaded to the iPhone. On his "GO Phone," he recreated piano, guitars, drums, and a horn section to make the album demo using a virtual four-track recording studio. He then went on to perform several songs on his iPhone at Wembley Stadium to a crowd of 70K people.
