CRYING WOLF

Transcendental Aussie rockers, Wolfmother, will return with a wonderfully ambitious new record, Cosmic Egg, scheduled for release on October 13th. This will be preceded by the release of the joyously shredding first single, “New Moon Rising,” which makes its radio premiere this Friday August 14.

It’s been a long road back following the internationally lauded, self-titled debut Wolfmother record, one that sold over 1.4 million copies worldwide and earned praise from around the globe, including a Grammy. The seeds for Cosmic Egg were sown when the touring cycle for the debut record came to a close, and front man and guitarist Andrew Stockdale sat down to start from scratch at his home studio in Brisbane. Following an extensive gestation period and the enlistment of new band members, Stockdale and his band of merry men, with producer Alan Moulder, rode ashore in picturesque hippy mecca Byron Bay, Australia, to begin pre-production.
Moulder meanwhile brought a mass of worldly producer experience to the table, from milestone works from the likes of My Bloody Valentine, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ride and Nine Inch Nails. From there the process transplanted to Los Angeles, a location that added another dimension of rich experience to Cosmic Egg. In short, Cosmic Egg is the sound of the Wolfmother world being re-imagined and reworked, for metaphysical and musical harmony.

Lead single “New Moon Rising,” is a thumping, ripping slice of optimistic future-blues, complete with textbook flaming Wolfmother guitar and joyously bludgeoning drums. It’s a thrilling rush of good times direct to the soul and one that’s sure to be inescapable very, very soon. Ahead of the 12-track sophomore broadcast, the new Wolfmother- (Andrew Stockdale [Vocals/Guitar], Ian Peres [Bass/Keys], Aidan Nemeth [Guitar], and Dave Atkins [Drums]) will journey across the USA in support of The Killers through late August / early September, then return home to unleash the new recordings upon Australian audiences for a series of theatre dates in the second half of September.

Go, who describes his music as “anthemic, epic, sharp pop with honest words,” wrote many tracks for his first album using software downloaded to the iPhone. On his "GO Phone," he recreated piano, guitars, drums, and a horn section to make the album demo using a virtual four-track recording studio. He then went on to perform several songs on his iPhone at Wembley Stadium to a crowd of 70K people.

LOLLAPALOOZA WRAP UP

This past weekend was the Lollapalooza Festival at Grant Park in Chicago. Of course, I missed another festival...annoying! This is what I need to be doing...traveling the world to the many different festivals. Anyhoo...someday, but in the meantime I gotta pick and choose, and unfortunitely I didn't choose Lollapalooza. Thank God for YouTube!!

Kings of Leon just one of many bands that took the stage over the weekend. Not the best footage, but you get the idea. I can't wait to check them out in LA in just over a week!

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs performing "Zero"...

Lykki Li covering "Knocked Up" by the Kings of Leon

And Depeche Mode performing "Enjoy The Silence" all live this weekend at this massive fest in Chicago.

AMUSING

A glammed-up rock stomper, “Uprising” is the first single from the band’s self-produced fifth studio album The Resistance, which will be released by Warner Bros. Records on September 15th. Recorded in Italy, the album was mixed by famed audio engineer Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, who is known for his work with U2, Depeche Mode, No Doubt, and Oasis, among many others.

The single is the first new music from Muse since Black Holes and Revelations, which debuted at Number 9 on Billboard’s album chart in July 2006. Over the last few years, Muse- comprised of vocalist/guitarist Matt Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dom Howard- have played to sold-out crowds worldwide in support of Black Holes and Revelations, which spawned the Modern Rock chart hits “Knights Of Cydonia,” “Starlight,” and “Supermassive Black Hole” (also featured on the soundtrack to the blockbuster 2008 film Twilight).

In the U.S. alone, the band, who hail from the tiny town of Teignmouth in Devon, England, performed at the Lollapalooza Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Las Vegas’s Vegoose Festival, and KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas. They also sold out New York City’s Madison Square Garden and The Forum in Los Angeles. In anticipation of their new album, Muse will perform at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13th, two days before The Resistance is released in the U.S. In addition, the band will open select shows for U2, including two shows at Giants Stadium in New York, this fall.

GET TO KNOW...

Sam (Brooker) and Ruby (Amanfu) individually are formidable talents. But together they are an aural force of nature. What’s even more amazing is that on the surface they are the most unlikely of duos. Ruby Amanfu was born in Ghana and raised in Nashville, Tennessee by her devout Christian parents, who sheltered her from secular music, exposing her only to classical and Christian music. Sam Brooker is about as all-American as they come, raised on football and James Taylor in Green Bay, Wisconsin. But when they met their musical chemistry was instantaneous

Nashville-based duo Sam & Ruby gently blend R&B, folk and pop into a sound so immediately warm and welcoming that falling in love with their debut album is a foregone conclusion. Ruby Amanfu boasts a sophisticated, soulful voice with gospel-like conviction. It beautifully complements Sam Brooker’s relaxed, confident approach, his voice balanced somewhere between the bar room and the back porch. They aim to reach both the head and the heart and a few other parts as well: 'The Here and the Now' will surely inspire more than a few couples to get up and dance close and slow, wherever and whenever they happen to be listening.

Their Rykodisc debut album The Here And The Now hitting the streets on August 11th!
