SONGS IN A MINOR

Since her songs were featured on a slew of MTV shows last season, things seem to be full stream ahead for UK's Olivia Broadfield. It's now only a matter of time before Olivia makes it big on this side of the pond.

Check out this clip that features Olivia around her house, garden, menagerie of animals and her local fish and chip shop.

Also, check out my interview with Olivia Broadfield a few weeks back for musicbleep.com, and head to www.myspace.com/oliviabroadfield to listen to her new song, "Too Late."

WE ARE SCIENTISTS HIT THE ROAD WITH KINGS OF LEON FOR FALL TOUR!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 7, 2008

WE ARE SCIENTISTS WATER-SKI BEHIND
THE POWERBOAT THAT IS KINGS OF LEON

NEW YORK -- We Are Scientists are freaking out like a group of 8 year-old boys who've caught a snake in a box, and the reason is that they got the Kings of Leon tour this fall. W.A.S. will spend five weeks in October and November supporting the Southern Rock icons in a slew of American cities that includes Milwaukee.

Until then, New Yorkers Keith Murray (guitar, lead vocals) and Chris Cain (bass, receded reverby vocals), along with stage mates Max Hart (keys, shrieks) and Adam Aaronson (drums, haircut), will bring their hook-heavy, chop-confident second album, Brain Thrust Mastery, back to Europe for a late-summer seven-country swing that will include the U.K., where the album debuted at No. 11, and a jaunt supporting R.E.M. in Italy, Germany, Lithuania, and Spain. Early October and an airplane will take the grown-men-without-jobs to Australia for a week of headliners before they literally double their skymile take by flying back home to join Kings of Leon.

The band is fresh off a late-July spot on CBS's The Late Show With David Letterman playing the British Top 15 single After Hours, about which Letterman himself exclaimed, immediately post-performance, "That's exactly what we're looking for... the beauty!" W.A.S.' seamless fusion of pop-rock influences stretching from the Sixties to 2012, their "nimble melodies and kinetic enthusiasm", were all praised as "hard to resist" by Alternative Press. A closer look revealed, though, that nine out of every ten employees of the Alternative Press did manage to resist when faced with the album in stores. We Are Scientists released their first album, With Love and Squalor, in 2005, scoring three major British hit singles and gold-certified album sales in the UK.

MORNING BECOMES DARKER

Darker My Love performed music from their latest album 2, on Morning Becomes Eclectic yesterday. The album was released Tuesday on Dangerbird Records. Take a listen!

GET TO KNOW...

Well, we made it through another long work week and the weekend is finally upon us! I am still coming off my Ting Tings high from Wednesday night, and I have just found the perfect person to help me with that transition. His name is Jason Reeves and he is definitely someone you need to know!

After moving from Iowa to LA, the second person Jason met was Colbie Caillat. They began playing together which lead to his contributing 10 tracks to her platinum-selling album Coco including hits "Bubbly" and "Realize." Jason was also named one of Top Indie Singer-Songwriters of 2007 by iTunes and has had his music featured on One Tree Hill and A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila.

Warner bros. recently signed and will release Jason’s new album The Magnificent Adventures of heartache (and other frightening tales) Aug. 12 digitally and in stores Sept. 9.

From the uplifting opening track “Someone Somewhere” through reflective closer “The End,” singer/songwriter Jason Reeves’ forthcoming album The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (and Other Frightening Tales) takes listeners on a contemplative journey of love, hope, heartbreak and renewal. Originally only available online and at his shows, the album’s beauty and raw honesty connected with listeners and earned a “Top Folk Album of 2007” distinction from iTunes, which also named Reeves one of the Top Indie Singer-Songwriters of that year. Now signed to Warner Bros. Records, which will widely-distribute his album for the first time, Jason’s own story continues, one that remains as pure as his outlook on life and music as it ever was.

Now 23, Reeves paints beautifully sophisticated portraits of some of life’s most vulnerable, yet exhilarating moments. “Reaching” for example, ponders the question of whether to abandon caution and the familiar in order to plunge headlong into the risk and potential reward of the unknown. “Pretty Eyes”, meanwhile, idealizes the utopian moments in life when one is in love, while “Never Find Again” reminds us that perfection is all-too-fleeting.

Perhaps most striking is that Reeves accomplishes this with memorable melodies and radio-ready hooks that seamlessly complement his warm vocals. With a range of subjects from the feel-good love anthem “You In A Song” to the dreaded but familiar feeling of being told a lover wants to be “Just Friends,” all of Reeves’ music is instantly relatable, and it is that accessibility that is rapidly winning Jason legions of new fans.

The spiritual Iowan, for his part, refuses to take the credit insisting, “All songs exist in the atmosphere, and artists are on a romantic search to pull them down and give them life.” And despite a busy tour schedule that includes sold-out performances at venues such as Hollywood’s Hotel CafĂ©, Reeves is giving life to lot of songs these days, both for himself as well as others. “Whether you are writing for a girl or a guy, you have to capture the voice of the artist singing,” says Reeves.

One voice Jason has successfully captured is that of Colbie Caillat, who happened to be the second person he met upon arriving in California. During a recording session with producer Mikal Blue, Reeves met Colbie, (whose father, Ken, is Blue’s studio partner and co-producer of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors) and an immediate friendship began.

The Reeves-Caillat-Blue trio soon became inseparable: writing songs and recording together every chance they had. “Mikal and Colbie were the only people I knew in LA,” Reeves says. “We spent a lot of time together, just going to the beach, the mountains, the woods, playing guitar and writing songs.” The songs, inspired by the beauty of the California Coast, formed the foundation for Reeves’ first EP Hearts Are Magnets, as well as Caillat’s breakthrough (and nearly double-platinum) album Coco, on which Reeves co-wrote the majority of tracks including the multi-format smash singles “Bubbly” and “Realize.”

Subject matter that resonates deeply, hook-filled melodies and Jason’s unmistakable vocals caused Reeves’ music to instantly engage the MySpace community and propelled him to #1 on the MySpace Folk chart (unsigned) for nine months prior to his record deal and kept him consistently in the Top Five Acoustic (unsigned) and Top 20 Overall (unsigned) categories. But with the story exploding on a daily basis, the reserved Iowan takes it all in stride: “I’m just a simple boy that believes in love and dreams.”

MORNINGWOOD TO RELEASE SUGARBABY EP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 7, 2008

YOUR MORNINGWOOD'S BACK:
UPCOMING DIGITAL EP FEATURES FOUR NEW SONGS;VIDEO TO PREMIERE ON FN MTV;PERFORMANCE ON THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN CONFIRMED

"Chantal Claret has as much punk-rock swagger as Courtney Love, pop appeal as Hilary Duff, and bawdy stage presence as Peaches (without the in-your-face raunch)." - Nylon NEW YORK - Capitol Records rock band Morningwood (Chantal Claret, Pedro Yanowitz), much-admired champions and torchbearers of the downtown New York scene, are returning with a new four-track digital EP to be released on August 12, 2008. The long awaited release will please fans including Alternative Press who included the group in their "Most Anticipated Releases of 2008" issue earlier this year.

Recently described by vocalist/writer Claret as having an eclectic sound with flavors of the band's many influences, EP tracks will include the all-out, crunchingly aggressive single, "Sugarbaby;" the hellzapoppin', tempo-shifting "That's How You Know It's Love," the seductive "Best of Me," and an anthemic "Killer Life." The hilarious upcoming video for "Sugarbaby" features a puppet crafted to the likeness of Claret by James W. Wojtal Jr., who has worked in the Jim Henson Studio and with the Broadway smash Avenue Q. MTV will premiere the video during their highly rated primetime show FN MTV this Friday, August 8th. The band will also be performing the single on The Late Show with David Letterman on September 24th.
Morningwood will once again start playing live shows with an upcoming slot at BUST Magazine's 15-year anniversary celebration, held August 12th in the unique 1920s-built Spiegeltent, located on Pier 17 at Manhattan's South Street Seaport.

Morningwood's first self-titled Capitol album was a Billboard Heatseekers No. 1 at its release in 2006 and received critical acclaim from publications including Blender, Paper, Giant, Nylon, Playboy and countless others and landed the band on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show, Last Call with Carson Daly and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The single "N.Y. Girls" is featured in the soundtrack of the 2008 No. 1 box-office smash film comedy Sex and the City.

SHUT UP I SAW THE SHOW!

Finally, after a few SOLD OUT shows in L.A., The Ting Tings invaded the El Rey last night, playing once again to a SOLD OUT crowd. This time I scored my tickets early enough, so I was assured not to miss out!

After a painful performance by this white rapper (luckiest guy to score an opening spot for The Ting Tings), the dynamic duo took the stage. Singing hits from their debut album WE STARTED NOTHING, which included "That's Not My Name", "Great DJ" and of course their massive hit "Shut Up And Let Me Go." Actually, I think every song off their album is AMAZING and could be massive hits!

There has been so much buzz around this band ever since they had their single "Shut Up And Let Me Go" in that iPod commercial, and last night I was lucky enough to have a front row seat to their hotness. Seriously, I have been to a lot of shows in the past few months, but these two killed it! It was probably one of my favorite shows.

Get your yourself a copy of their album TODAY! I have a widget to the right where you can click on and purchase it directly from Amazon for $6.99. It's definitely one of my picks for the summer...

Check out this clip of Courtney Love talking about Kurt, her daughter, and how this might be the last time she records a record.

She actually sounds really put together in this clip! Lets hope she finally has her life back on track, and maybe this will be the Courtney Love comeback we have all been waiting for.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM'S JAMES MURPHY AND PAT MAHONEY BRING UNDISCOVERED DISCO FROM COAST TO COAST AND ACROSS THE POND; DJ CLUB TOUR KICKS OFF AUGUST 7 IN SAN FRANCISCO.

August 5, 2008 - New York, NY - Forget jumpsuits, Studio 54 and John Travolta. The true heart of disco is deeper, and James Murphy and Pat Mahoney want to take you directly into it.

Murphy, the leader of Grammy-nominated dance-rock band LCD Soundsystem, and co-founder of vanguard imprint DFA Records; and Mahoney, LCD's drummer, are taking their love and appreciation for undiscovered disco music on the road, with a 26-date, three-month international tour, under the moniker Special Disco Version. The project is an extension of their hush-hush, roof-shaking parties that, in the past have taken place at NYC's APT and currently resides at NYC's Santos.

"People hear that word disco, and they see bellbottoms and 'That '70s Show.' No, no, no," says Murphy. "This is real liberation music for people who know where to go. This is the real deal."

The frequently overlooked and undermined period of American musical history resulted in some of its richest material, inspiring Murphy as he built DFA; and creating the role of the DJ and structure of the nightclub as we now know them. With bands like DFA's own Hercules & Love Affair snagging critical and fan praise all over the world, the air is rife for a second disco revolution.

"Special Disco Version" is an old term for a dance interpretation of a pop song, now known as a remix. It was frequently printed on a circular sticker and slapped on the record's sleeve, left for Murphy and Mahoney to discover 30 years later as they plumbed the bins at New York record stores. SDV the party will bring back such gems - some of which are more rock than dance, and more minimal than orchestral - to curious dance floors, and mix them with new material. The fresh blend will rock the party in unprecedented ways, and offer LCD fans a new perspective on the musical roots of their favorite band.

"With SDV, I can keep experimenting with remixes that we're working on, I can keep playing new stuff, and I can keep finding old records," says Murphy.

SDV's disco is The Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancin'," but not the original: The unreleased dub version. It's not Studio 54: It's The Loft, a NYC venue open at the same time, where the music was so much the focus that DJ David Mancuso would let songs finish in silence, rather than mix them into each other, so each could be appreciated on its own. It's Francis Grasso, the New York DJ who would blend Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin during marathon, 12-hour sets, and reportedly lived in his DJ booth at West Side club Salvation. "How punk rock is that?" says Murphy.

Jack's Mannequin is back with a new single from their upcoming album THE GLASS PASSENGER.

"The Resolution" is their latest single that premiered yesterday on their myspace page. It's pure Jack's Mannequin and it definitely stays true to their sound. This song is AMAZING, and it just gets me more amped for the release of their album, which is due out September 30th.

In the meantime, if you don't have your copy of their last album, EVERYTHING IN TRANSIT, get your hands on a copy. It is one of my favorite albums, and we are definitely in for a treat if their upcoming release is anything like their last.

THE KING OF ROCK

Coldplay has released an "alternative" version of their latest video "Viva La Vida", directed by Anton Corbijn. It features Chris walking around sans the band (until the very end) dressed as a King, while he holds a picture of the Viva La Vida album cover.

P.S. Doesn't he kind of remind you of the Burger King mascot? I'm just sayin'...

And here is the other "official" video of "Viva La Vida", directed by Hype Williams that we premiered on musicbleep last week.

RAY LAMONTAGNE TO RELEASE THIRD ALBUM,
'GOSSIP IN THE GRAIN' ON October 14th

Lauded singer/songwriter, Ray LaMontagne is set to release his much-anticipated third album, Gossip In The Grain, on October 14th on RCA Records. Recorded with returning producer, Ethan Johns in Box, England, and touching upon a range of styles and musical settings- spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry - Gossip In The Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date.

Whereas LaMontagne's two previous albums, 'Trouble' and 'Till The Sun Turns Black', were largely solo affairs, with Johns serving as multi-tasking instrumentalist, Gossip In The Grain sees him joined by members of his touring band, bassist Jennifer Condos and guitarist Eric Heywood (with Johns largely handling drum duties). Along with his band members, LaMontagne is also joined on two tracks - "A Falling Through" and "I Still Care For You" - by singer/songwriter Leona Naess.

As LaMontagne explains "It was time to open up a little bit more, not be quite so reserved in my choice of songs that I wanted to record. I'm really very critical of myself and it's sort of a process of opening up. I felt like I was in the right space to show that side of myself." Recently called by Vanity Fair "a fresh reminder that the genuine artist is not yet an extinct species," Gossip In The Grain reconfirms Ray LaMontagne as an artist and a craftsman without limits, a songwriter who is able to work his melodic gifts and distinctive lyricism through any of the myriad musical traditions that catches his fancy.
